A dense, dark press with a resinous surface and a deep earthy aroma that opens up considerably once warmed. Notes of wood and black pepper come through as it heats. The effect is heavy and grounding, so it is worth planning a quiet evening around it rather than fitting it into a busy one. It crumbles well into a joint or a bowl once softened.

Colour comes from the cultivar, from how many times the resin was sieved, and from how long it cured before pressing. Early and light sifts give the blonde presses, later sifts press darker, and curing darkens them further still. Darker is not stronger as a rule, though it usually means a fuller, earthier flavour.
